With a score of 8-2, it would look like the Bulldogs had the game in hand from start to finish. To anyone watching the start of the season was full of drama and only in the third period was the outcome becoming clear.
In the first two periods, it was the Spitfires who were getting the most chances. They set the tone in the first, eventually outshooting the Bulldogs 11-7. It was more of the same in the second with a 16-12 differential. On more than one occasion a scoring chance was thwarted by a sprawling save or the post, and sometimes both.
But despite being outshot, it was the Bulldogs that were putting the puck past the goal line. The first goal of the year for the Bulldogs belongs to J. Anderson at 12:04. Halfway through the second, some much needed insurance was added on with goals from Babcock, Chanthavongsa, and S. Swanson. The score at the end of the second was 4-0, but some changes in puck luck could have resulted in a very different outcome.
In the third is when the floodgates opened. R. Swanson made it 5-0 a minute and a half into the third. R. Babcock made it 6-0 30 seconds later with his second of the game. 3 minutes later it was K. Gardner. The Spitfires were finally rewarded with 9 minutes left in the game with a goal from J. Basile ending the shutout bid. B. Barrows made it 7-2, but J. Anderson responded soon after with a goal for the Bulldogs to ensure there would be no collapse in the first game.
The season opener win for the Bulldogs was their first since the 2016-17 regular season. They look to continue their winning ways on the 13th against the 0-1 Sharks.
