The first installment of the Battle of the Abs did not disappoint in a back and forth game between the Rockets and the Wheels on Wednesday. At the end of the game, the Wheels would take the first game 4-3.
The first period started a slow, with only 12 shots for both teams as neither was able to generate enough possession time to generate much offense. It would be the Ab Wheels that strike first, however. With 3 minutes left, A. Wick finds himself alone in the slot and a quick shot darts over the blocker and propels the Wheels for the first lead of the game.
The Ab Rockets would take back the momentum as soon as the second period started. Goals by Croat and Romo within 2 minutes of each other gave the Rockets their first lead of the game. For the first time this season, the Rockets would have more shots than their opponents in a period of play. As the period dragged on, the Ab Wheels regained some of their momentum. With 5 minutes left in the game, a sharp angle shot produces a prime rebound and S. Seeger makes no mistake, tying the game 2-2.
The Wheels would retain the momentum in the third, scoring two more with a Mueffelmann-Mueffelmann connection early in the period to take the lead and then again midway through as S. Seeger finds a second rebound and buries the puck to get a 2-goal advantage over the Rockets. C. Nichols is able to answer back with a goal to bring the Rockets within 1 late in the game, but there is no game tying goal to force overtime in the end.
The Rockets fall to 1-2 on the season. However, all three games have been very competitive and the goal differential is only -2 despite a -28 shot differential. The team hopes to get back to .500 on Wednesday against the Shake Weights.
