A good start and a two goal lead heading into period three had the Bulldogs feeling like they might just break into the win column for the first time in the young season. For five minutes in the third period, all of those thoughts nearly evaporated into despair.
In the first two periods, it looked like the Bulldogs were going to be able to contain the Northern Gators attack. The Gators had a 10-6 lead in shots after the first period, but the only goal of the period belonged to A. Miller. The second period saw more shots for the Bulldogs and a goal by S. Cooley. However, the Northern Gators were able to bring the game back to 2-1 when J. Sedey was able to win a scramble in front of the net to score a powerplay goal.
Then the third period started. Seven minutes in, the Bulldogs brought the score to 3-1 on a goal by K. Gardner. Just one minute later, a breakaway goal by J. Dean brings the Gators back to 3-2. Dean would follow up with another goal two minutes later on a backhand shot that goes top shelf. Just 90 seconds later, R. Babcock regains the lead for the Bulldogs, only to see it disappear in 30 seconds as P. Hennessy scores to even the game up at 4-4. Both goalies at this point are praying for the pain to end, and the final five minutes see no more additional entries in the score sheet.
Despite giving up the two goal lead, the Bulldogs hang tough and are finally rewarded in overtime when K. Gardner buries the puck in the back of the net to seal their first win of the season.
The Bulldogs look to build on the momentum but will have a tough test next Sunday when they take on the undefeated Lumberjacks in Highland.
